I came aboard in Oct-69 in Danang Vietnam right out of boot camp. After spending 3 wonderful weeks in transit at Camp Tein Sha near Danang.I was a FN-2 and was assigned to M-Division. My 1st job was Messenger of the watch which I messed up royaly,by allowing the riffer to get above 35 degrees and all of the frozen meat spoiled and had to be thrown over board.Which made me very unpopular among the crew members.I was placed on Mess Duty which didn't work out well either.I left my duty station after refusing a direct order from the CO and hid in the well deck for 2 days.I was sent to NSA,Danang for evaluation.Where I spent the next 3 weeks then they shipped me to Yokuska, Japan for 3 weeks for evaluation.I was sent back to the ship with orders to the CO to be expedtionaly Discharged. The CO said this was his ship and he had no intension of discharging me.He placed me in the brigg which was storage area in the bow of the ship for 3 days on bread and water.I decided that it was better to follow orders than to do 3 more days on bread and water.Believe it or not I got squared away and later in the year I was at another Captains Mast for stealing a bicycle from the base at Subic Bay to ride back to the ship and of course I was drunk. The Captain said to me, Hayes, all hell thats just regular Navy shit and I was a good Sailor now and only gave me 3 days cofined to the ship.Believe it or not I completed my 3yr 7 mo. tour of duty with 2 tours in Vietnam. But I was reasigned after a year to the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19. I will never forget my time on the Thomaston, which helped a boy become a man.

Well shipmates I am down in San Antonio checking things out and it really looks good for the Sept reunion and everyone is going to like the hotel Johnny Witt, this years host, has picked out. By the way he has had more then his share of bad luck two weeks ago his house burned down to the ground luckily he and wife Evelyn got out unscathed.
The reunion has already had a lot of interest so when you can please make your reservations early and show some support for the Witts and all the work they have done.

I was not a Thomaston crew member. (Navy airdale from 1961 to 1965 at NAS North Island & Mirimar). I am a retired Veterans Benefits Counselor still finding time to assist veterans with VA claims for possible service related health issues. The VA and I ( and a lot of others) do not see eye to eye on the issue of AO exposure to Navy personel. Two former Thomaston crew members (that I am personally aware of) have died of diabetes related health problems, however, since we cannot substantiate the "boots on the ground" requirement of the VA, the widow is unable to claim VA benefits. What are the chances that any crew members went ashore or sailed upriver as part of the "Brown Water" Navy ?

Happy New Year! We love this website. It has been very helpful for our members. Also, our members tell us that our website is the best place for veterans to find information about compensation, pension and benefits for veterans. We have been told that VSOs now recommend that veterans visit our website first before filing a claim. Veterans learn about the process, who to see, where to go, and how to maximize their disability claims. Visit today!

I was on the ship from Dec. 81 to decommissioning. It was the best and worst time of my life. Two west-pacs, a tiger cruise and a trip to Oregon and Washington state stand out. Came on board an E2 made E3 three times and got out an E1! Chief Cain and HT1 Kyllo I WILL find you weasels one of these days, I'm not scared of you anymore! I am sending out emails to everyone and hope that we can all get together sometime.
